SUMMARY:Decarbonization in Practice: Whole Life-cycle Thinking for Buildings – An APEGS Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 17\, 2025 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format: Live Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Webinar Series Presentation \nRegistration is now closed.  \n___________________________________________ \nEvent Summary: This presentation explores actionable strategies for building decarbonization through whole life cycle thinking. It addresses the urgency of climate change and the built environment’s role in global CO₂ emissions\, introducing key concepts such as embodied and operational carbon\, whole life-cycle assessment (WLCA)\, and EN15978 standards. A sequential design approach is emphasized\, integrating passive and active systems\, renewable energy\, electrification\, and smart grid technologies. The presentation highlights the importance of reducing embodied carbon through material selection\, reuse\, and low-carbon procurement. It also introduces methodologies like CIBSE TM65 for assessing embodied carbon in building services equipment. Practical design strategies are outlined across planning\, design\, construction\, and occupancy phases to achieve net-zero energy and carbon goals. The session concludes with insights on managing net-zero operations\, leveraging digital tools\, and aligning sustainability goals with cost and risk considerations. This comprehensive framework empowers professionals to implement effective decarbonization across the building lifecycle. \nPresenter: \nGhina Annan\, Engineer-in-Training\, is a sustainability and decarbonization leader with 14 years of experience in high-performance building design. She advances regenerative solutions that promote human and planetary health\, applying systems thinking to the Carbon\, Energy\, Water Nexus and the Five Capital model. Ghina contributed to ASHRAE guidelines on whole life carbon and co-authored CIBSE TM65 for North America. She serves on the ASHRAE Decarbonization Center of Excellence and has received multiple honors\, including the 2022 International Young Energy Professional Award\, 2024 ASHRAE Inspirational Leader Award\, and Ottawa’s Forty Under 40 for 2025. \nWho Should Attend: Architects\, Engineers\, Sustainability consultants\, Building services professionals\, Policy makers\, Developers\, Project managers\, Facility managers\, Procurement specialists\, Energy analysts\, Urban planners\, Construction professionals \n___________________________________________ \nGeneral Information: There is no cost to attend\, but registration is required. This webinar is eligible for 1 verifiable Formal Activity CPD credit. \nNOTE: Clicking the ‘Add to Calendar’ button on this page does NOT register you for this event. \nThis webinar will not be recorded. \n___________________________________________ \nEvent Contact: APEGS Professional Development Department | Angela Foster or Jolene Arthur | cpd@apegs.ca \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the presenters and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.
