SUMMARY:How Engineers Can Save Lives with Additive Manufacturing
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 30\, 2025 \nTime: 7 PM – 8PM CST \nEvent Format: Virtual Lecture \nLocation: Online \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Engineering Society \nEvent Summary: In tissue engineering\, tissue scaffolds can be fabricated by various means—among them three dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a promising method of fabrication. During the printing process\, materials are forced to flow out of the printing head to form a 3D structure on the printing stage. The properties and printability of these materials are important to the formation and maintenance of the architecture and structural integrity of the scaffolds. Among the various materials used to print tissue scaffolds\, sodium alginate (Alg) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCt) stand out due to their biocompatibility\, biodegradability\, and their ability to retain a large amount of water for mimicking the native extracellular matrix. This presentation will introduce background concepts important to tissue scaffolds like the integration of 3D printing with polymeric materials and tissue scaffolds design. Then\, data on characterization and optimization methods for printing will be shown\, and finally future strategies to address some gaps in the current research will be discussed. \nHow to Register: Click here for more information and to register \nEvent Contact: Saskatoon Engineering Society: www.saskatoonengineers.com \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.

SUMMARY:Speaking of Diversity in Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 12\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nEvent Format: Lecture \nLocation: Online \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Engineering Society \nEvent Summary: Historically\, engineering and control systems have had a rather homogeneous set of participation\, which is caused by a variety of factors ranging from bias to long held social norms and company and government policies which do not to support broader participation in the workforce. Additionally\, when achievements are experienced by more diverse members\, they are often overlooked or diminished which contribute to high dropout rates. By failing to improve inclusion\, the damages and lost opportunities lie not just with those who are not included\, but with the industry as a whole. A more diverse cast offers a wider array of experiences and knowledge known to lead to better solutions. To improve this\, broad changes are necessary from how we view and support less traditional candidates to how employers and governments support workers and families. \nHow to Register: Click here for more information and to register \nEvent Contact: Saskatoon Engineering Society – info@saskatoonengineers.com \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.

SUMMARY:Heat Pumps and Hybrid Heating for Saskatchewan – An APEGS Webinar - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 5\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format: Live Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: Heat pumps have gained increasing attention from the media\, public\, and HVAC industry. While their principles are well understood\, their application in cold climates and the role of hybrid heating systems for effective integration are less clear. This session will offer an overview of the different types of heat pumps and hybrid heating systems\, including their benefits\, challenges\, and emissions comparisons tailored to Saskatchewan’s climate. Understanding investment costs\, operating expenses\, and building upgrade requirements is crucial for selecting long-term heating solutions. \nPresenter: Hadi Ramin is an Engineer-in-Training in Sustainable Energy Solutions at SaskEnergy. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Iran and a Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 2021\, focusing on optimizing air-to-air energy recovery exchangers. After his Ph.D.\, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow developing thermal energy storage systems for residential use. Since joining SaskEnergy in 2023\, Hadi has been supporting customers in reducing emissions through energy efficiency and emerging technologies. \nWho Should Attend: The target audience includes engineers\, energy professionals\, building managers\, HVAC contractors\, policymakers\, environmental consultants\, and customers interested in reducing energy consumption and emissions. It will also benefit those involved in sustainability initiatives\, government programs\, and anyone looking to adopt emerging technologies like gas heat pumps and hybrid heating systems. \nGeneral Information: There is no cost to attend\, but registration is required. This webinar is eligible for Formal Activity CPD credit. \nThis event will be held live on the Microsoft Teams platform.  The meeting link will be sent by end of day on December 3\, 2024\, to the email address in which you registered for this event. \nThis webinar is now full. If you need to cancel your registration to this event\, please email cpd@apegs.ca \nNOTE: Clicking the ‘Add to Calendar’ button on this page does NOT register you for this event. \nEvent Contact: APEGS Professional Development Department -Angela Foster or Jolene Arthur – cpd@apegs.ca \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the presenters and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.

SUMMARY:Design and Development of Hybrid Renewable Microgrids - An APEGS Webinar - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 4\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format:  Live Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Live Webinar Series Presentation \nEvent Summary: Today\, due to environmental concerns about CO2 emissions in the power generation sector and increasing electricity demands\, renewable energy resources are becoming increasingly popular. The rate of renewable penetration in power systems is growing faster than it did two decades ago. Renewable energies can be utilized on a large scale\, such as at the utility level\, or on a smaller scale\, such as residential or commercial applications\, where they can operate in isolated mode. The utilization of renewable energy resources is often carried out through the concept of microgrids. A microgrid is a combination of two or more renewable energy resources that collaborate within a controllable architecture to provide reliable power to loads. Microgrids can either be connected to the utility power grid or operate independently in isolated mode. This presentation focuses on the design and development of hybrid renewable microgrids for remote communities in Northern Saskatchewan. It is based on a research project conducted at the University of Regina. The presentation covers the basics of designing a hybrid microgrid and introduces the use of Vortex turbines and Vanadium Flow Batteries as potential distributed units for power production applications in Saskatchewan. \nPresenter: Mehdi Hedayatpour\, Engineer-in-Training – Mehdi’s interest in engineering began in high school and continued on to Polytechnique and university where he earned an Associate degree and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Mehdi then pursued a Master’s degree in electrical engineering\, specializing in power system control\, operation\, and renewable energies. After completing his military service and gaining some work experience\, Mehdi developed an interest in mechanical engineering. He earned a second Master’s degree in Industrial System Engineering\, during which he worked on two research projects: the design and development of a military hybrid electric tank\, and the design and development of hybrid renewable power plants for remote communities. Mehdi graduated from the University of Regina in February 2024. He currently works at SaskPower as an electrical engineer in the Hydro & Renewable department. \nWho Should Attend: Electrical engineers\, civil engineers\, mechanical engineers\, and utility company specialists. \nGeneral Information: There is no cost to attend\, but registration is required. This webinar is eligible for Formal Activity CPD credit. This event will be held live on the Microsoft Teams platform.  The meeting link will be sent by end of day on December 2\, 2024 to the email address in which you registered for this event. \nNOTE: Clicking the ‘Add to Calendar’ button on this page does NOT register you for this event. \nThis webinar is now full.
