SUMMARY:SGS - Sedimentological Heterogeneities of the Montney Formation: Case Study along the Pouce Coupe-Groundbirch Trend
DESCRIPTION:The Lower Triassic Montney Formation is often referred to as the “Monotoney” with its thickness of up to 300 m of seemingly monotonous appearance of mainly planar laminated grey siltstone. However\, sedimentological heterogeneities are prevalent throughout the formation as facies variability and depositional processes subtly change both spatially and temporally. Since the formation is predominately composed of silt sized grains\, innovative techniques and the integration of datasets are needed to assess and quantify subtle heterogeneities within the interval. To investigate such variability\, a detailed facies analysis was conducted on core within the greater Pouce Coupe field in Alberta to identify lithological characteristics and sedimentological fabrics. Trends observed in Pouce Coupe were extrapolated westward into British Columbia using core and well log data. Understanding sedimentological heterogeneities can inherently be linked to geomechanical and reservoir properties\, and likely play an important role in understanding the behavior of hydraulic fracturing within this unconventional reservoir. \nDr. Carolyn Furlong\nPostdoctoral Associate\nUniversity of Calgary \nDr. Carolyn Furlong is currently a Post Doctoral Associate at the University of Calgary. She has worked on a variety of projects integrating the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Lower Triassic Montney Formation with other geological\, geophysical\, and engineering datasets. Some projects include regional subsurface mapping and facies distribution\, investigating the relationship between rock properties and natural fractures with induced seismicity\, and understanding the sedimentologic and stratigraphic controls on the distribution of toxic\, sour gas (hydrogen sulphide\, H2S) in Triassic rocks in Western Canada. She holds a PhD and MSc in geology from the University of Alberta and a BSc in Earth Science Education from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland and will be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor at the Grant MacEwan University in the fall. \nTalk to start at 12:00 pm (CST)\nOnline meeting link

SUMMARY:Saskatchewan Research Council - Slurry Pipeline Systems Course
DESCRIPTION:Slurry pipeline transportation is a field that is not adequately covered in undergraduate engineering courses. Consequently\, engineers are generally ill-equipped when faced with the task of designing a slurry transportation system or troubleshooting an existing installation. \nThe course focuses on applying the basic principles of slurry pipeline flows to actual design situations. This course will provide an excellent opportunity for people involved in slurry transportation to meet in an informal environment\, to share experiences and to foster a uniform technical language and approach for slurry flow analysis. \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:University of Regina - Decarbonizing Transportation Seminar - Electric Vehicles: Challenges\, Strategies and Emission Mitigations
DESCRIPTION:The transportation sector accounts for around 25% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Electric Vehicles (EV) and cleaner fuels are key to decarbonizing our communities and society. However\, the uneven and limited infrastructure is one major roadblock. Less than 6% of electric chargers are in the Prairie region which makes EVs problematic for long trips. Furthermore\, although Canada sets the mandatory target for passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035\, charging queuing and cold weather are major concerns for urban EV trips. Such growing challenges are critical reasons that EVs still make up fewer than 5% of Canadian passenger vehicles. This seminar will address the growing challenges\, strategies and future vision of electric vehicle development towards sustainable\, inclusive and zero-emission transportation and society. \nAll are welcome and invited to attend! \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:SGS - Upside Potential of the Basal Mississippian Souris Valley Beds/Lodgepole Formation in Southeast Saskatchewan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nProspecting for hydrocarbons along the Souris Valley Beds subcrop edge in Southeast Saskatchewan has met with very disappointing results (save for the Parkman Pool). This core display suggests an alternative model for future exploration activity. Klassen (1996) mapped Lodgepole shelf\, slope and basin facies in Southwestern Manitoba and suggested that Southeast Saskatchewan represents deposition in a deeper non-reservoir facies. \nThis core presentation suggests erosion removed the reservoir in Southeast Saskatchewan and northwestern North Dakota. Stratigraphic cross-sections through the Daly and Virden Lodgepole Pools in southwestern Manitoba were studied as an analogue for exploring elsewhere in the basin and revealed Sequence Boundaries and ravinement surfaces/sea cliffs which show rapid sea level changes affecting preservation of the section. \nThe two cores on display are a composite of the Lodgepole Formation from Bakken/Lodgepole contact to top of the Lower Daly Member reservoir (Cruickshank Member in the Daly Pool (100/01-30-009-28W1/00; Cal. Stan. Daly)\, which represents the lower portion of the Lodgepole Formation\, and Lower Daly Member reservoir facies at the top of the Lodgepole Formation (100/11-04-010-28W1/00; Daly Unit No. 1) in southwestern Manitoba). Erosion of the reservoir was likely initiated by reactivation of sinistral faults along the Churchill/Superior Boundary. \nSpeaker Biography \nJohn Lake\nLake Geological Services Inc. \nJohn received an Honours B.Sc in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo in 1973 and M.Sc in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from McGill in 1977. Worked for Mobil Oil Canada in Calgary from 1979-1989 (Production Geology in Saskatchewan from 1983). Worked for Saskoil in Regina and Swift Current from 1990-1995\, and has been a Consulting Geologist from 1995 – present. Experience includes Wellsite Geology and describing cores. \nRSVP by noon\, Tuesday\, May 23. \nSGS_Talk Notice_23-05-24_Lake
