SUMMARY:University of Regina - Decarbonizing Transportation Seminar - Electric Vehicles: Challenges\, Strategies and Emission Mitigations
DESCRIPTION:The transportation sector accounts for around 25% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Electric Vehicles (EV) and cleaner fuels are key to decarbonizing our communities and society. However\, the uneven and limited infrastructure is one major roadblock. Less than 6% of electric chargers are in the Prairie region which makes EVs problematic for long trips. Furthermore\, although Canada sets the mandatory target for passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035\, charging queuing and cold weather are major concerns for urban EV trips. Such growing challenges are critical reasons that EVs still make up fewer than 5% of Canadian passenger vehicles. This seminar will address the growing challenges\, strategies and future vision of electric vehicle development towards sustainable\, inclusive and zero-emission transportation and society. \nAll are welcome and invited to attend! \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:SGS - Upside Potential of the Basal Mississippian Souris Valley Beds/Lodgepole Formation in Southeast Saskatchewan
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nProspecting for hydrocarbons along the Souris Valley Beds subcrop edge in Southeast Saskatchewan has met with very disappointing results (save for the Parkman Pool). This core display suggests an alternative model for future exploration activity. Klassen (1996) mapped Lodgepole shelf\, slope and basin facies in Southwestern Manitoba and suggested that Southeast Saskatchewan represents deposition in a deeper non-reservoir facies. \nThis core presentation suggests erosion removed the reservoir in Southeast Saskatchewan and northwestern North Dakota. Stratigraphic cross-sections through the Daly and Virden Lodgepole Pools in southwestern Manitoba were studied as an analogue for exploring elsewhere in the basin and revealed Sequence Boundaries and ravinement surfaces/sea cliffs which show rapid sea level changes affecting preservation of the section. \nThe two cores on display are a composite of the Lodgepole Formation from Bakken/Lodgepole contact to top of the Lower Daly Member reservoir (Cruickshank Member in the Daly Pool (100/01-30-009-28W1/00; Cal. Stan. Daly)\, which represents the lower portion of the Lodgepole Formation\, and Lower Daly Member reservoir facies at the top of the Lodgepole Formation (100/11-04-010-28W1/00; Daly Unit No. 1) in southwestern Manitoba). Erosion of the reservoir was likely initiated by reactivation of sinistral faults along the Churchill/Superior Boundary. \nSpeaker Biography \nJohn Lake\nLake Geological Services Inc. \nJohn received an Honours B.Sc in Earth Sciences from the University of Waterloo in 1973 and M.Sc in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from McGill in 1977. Worked for Mobil Oil Canada in Calgary from 1979-1989 (Production Geology in Saskatchewan from 1983). Worked for Saskoil in Regina and Swift Current from 1990-1995\, and has been a Consulting Geologist from 1995 – present. Experience includes Wellsite Geology and describing cores. \nRSVP by noon\, Tuesday\, May 23. \nSGS_Talk Notice_23-05-24_Lake

SUMMARY:Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium - Introducing The Design Value Explorer – Integrating Future Climate Data into The Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:Calling all building sector professionals! We are pleased to invite you to an interactive climate change training session on PCIC’s newest web-based tool – the Design Value Explorer (DVE). The DVE is the result of a collaborative project between PCIC\, Environment and Climate Change Canada\, Infrastructure Canada\, and the National Research Council of Canada. \nThe DVE provides revised climatic design data relevant to the National Building Code of Canada and the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The tool provides building professionals with historical and future-projected design values for all of Canada that incorporate projected changes in climate. \nThis session will be jointly delivered by PCIC\, the Canadian Centre for Climate Services (CCCS)\, and Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia. It will begin with the fundamentals of climate science and an explanation of key considerations for using the tool\, leading to an in-depth demonstration of the tool itself. \nWe will examine the unique data and features of the tool that will aid building and infrastructure design professionals in the consideration of climate change risks and the incorporation of climate change into design and construction phases. \nThis session will include an interactive exercise to ensure attendees have a chance to use the tool\, ask questions\, and provide feedback. Feel free to explore the Design Value Explorer ahead of time\, and come with your questions! \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:iPolytek - How Sustainable is PV Solar Power? An Intro to Life Cycle Analysis and Planetary Boundaries - Online Course
DESCRIPTION:If you search “solar photovoltaic sustainability” on the internet\, you will find a multitude of articles hailing the technology as green\, clean and ready to spearhead our world into a sustainable future. However\, you will also come across articles that are much more critical of the technology. This begs the question\, “How does one go about accessing the environmental impacts of a technology in a systematic\, objective way?” We answer this question using PV solar power as a case study. \nIn this course\, we study an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of solar photovoltaic power and learn of its impacts on human health\, freshwater\, climate change\, ecosystems and land use. We compare the environmental performance of solar PV to other renewable and non-renewable electricity generation technologies. Finally\, we take an in-depth look at a scientific article in which researchers show how countries can determine their optimal energy mix given their available resources and environmental objectives. \nTime: 4-hour self-paced course. Access this course online 24/7 for up to 2 years. \nLocation: Online – Register anytime and gain immediate access \nClick here for more information and to register.
