These elements encompass equipment\, systems\, and controls that are essential for preventing or mitigating major accidents hazards\, such as fires\, explosions\, and toxic releases. During Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)\, identifying and assessing SCEs ensures that potential risks are recognized and adequately managed by the team tasked with these responsibilities. By focusing on SCEs\, organizations can prioritize resources to maintain\, monitor\, and improve critical safety barriers\, thereby minimizing the likelihood of catastrophic failures. Identification and management of SCEs falls under many of the important elements in CSA767:2022 Process Safety Management. The integration of SCEs into PHA fosters a proactive approach to risk management\, enhancing the overall safety of operations and compliance with regulatory standards. Ultimately\, the recognition of SCEs underscores their vital role in preventing accidents and ensuring the protection of both personnel and the environment. \n Presenters: David Asekomhe\, Engineering Licensee\, is a safety enthusiast and agent of change with over 20 years of experience in the oil and gas\, petrochemical\, chemical\, and energy industries. With engineering and master’s degrees from the University of Manchester\, he currently serves as president and board member of RskLess Inc.\, a minority-owned organization in Calgary dedicated to empowering future PSM engineers and executives. His career began at ExxonMobil\, followed by senior roles in the UK. In 2013\, he moved to Canada\, advancing to VP at a process safety consulting company for over nine years. He has extensive experience in PSM and views it as a passion rather than just a job. Additionally\, he contributed to developing PSM frameworks for Qatar’s largest petrochemical company. \nJamie Merriam is a Process Safety and Safety Instrumented System trainer and a registered Professional Engineer with APEGA. With over 30 years of industry experience\, including 20 years dedicated to process safety issues\, Jamie currently consults on technical and training matters with David Asekomhe and Rskless Inc. Jamie began his career as an instrumentation technologist from SAIT\, working in construction and maintenance for about 10 years. In the early 90s\, Jamie moved to the USA and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. SUMMARY:The Rainy River Tailings Management Area
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 14\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 – 1:00 PM CST \nEvent Format: In person presentation \nLocation: Saskatoon\, SK \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group \nEvent Summary: The Rainy River Tailings Management Area (TMA) in Northern Ontario is uniquely situated above highly plastic\, normally consolidated glacial clay soils of variable thickness. Since 2022\, SRK has assumed the Engineer of Record (EOR) role for the Rainy River TMA. This involves annual TMA dam raise design\, on-site support for construction quality control/assurance\, and dam performance monitoring during and post-construction. The TMA is of zoned material construction consisting of clay core dams with chimney and blanket filters and rockfill buttressing\, constructed upwards of ~30m in height. The clay foundation soils govern the design and construction of the dams. The design of the TMA requires large upstream and downstream rockfill buttressing combined with extensive monitoring to ensure continued performance is maintained. Instrumentation within the TMA foundation is extensive\, including piezometers\, slope inclinometers\, shape arrays\, settlement plates and magnetic extensometers to monitor the site. Both significant displacements (both lateral and vertical) and excess pore water pressures are observed throughout the year in response to additional loading. Monitoring of the instrumentation is a constant effort shared by the owner and EOR. The rate of renewable penetration in power systems is growing faster than it did two decades ago. Renewable energies can be utilized on a large scale\, such as at the utility level\, or on a smaller scale\, such as residential or commercial applications\, where they can operate in isolated mode. The utilization of renewable energy resources is often carried out through the concept of microgrids. A microgrid is a combination of two or more renewable energy resources that collaborate within a controllable architecture to provide reliable power to loads. Microgrids can either be connected to the utility power grid or operate independently in isolated mode. This presentation focuses on the design and development of hybrid renewable microgrids for remote communities in Northern Saskatchewan. It is based on a research project conducted at the University of Regina. The presentation covers the basics of designing a hybrid microgrid and introduces the use of Vortex turbines and Vanadium Flow Batteries as potential distributed units for power production applications in Saskatchewan. \nPresenter: Mehdi Hedayatpour\, Engineer-in-Training – Mehdi’s interest in engineering began in high school and continued on to Polytechnique and university where he earned an Associate degree and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Mehdi then pursued a Master’s degree in electrical engineering\, specializing in power system control\, operation\, and renewable energies. After completing his military service and gaining some work experience\, Mehdi developed an interest in mechanical engineering. He earned a second Master’s degree in Industrial System Engineering\, during which he worked on two research projects: the design and development of a military hybrid electric tank\, and the design and development of hybrid renewable power plants for remote communities. Mehdi graduated from the University of Regina in February 2024. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Iran and a Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in 2021\, focusing on optimizing air-to-air energy recovery exchangers. Mr. Wotherspoon has 20 plus years of experience for construction including design and implementation in provincial and municipal levels of government in addition to private industry. During his career he has published or co-published various guides and advisories to develop knowledge to all stakeholders throughout Saskatchewan and currently sits on a variety of construction standards related national and technical committees. Mr. Wotherspoon possesses a Professional Technologist (P. DESCRIPTION:Date: January 30\, 2025 \nTime: 7 PM – 8PM CST \nEvent Format: Virtual Lecture \nLocation: Online \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Engineering Society \nEvent Summary: In tissue engineering\, tissue scaffolds can be fabricated by various means—among them three dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a promising method of fabrication. During the printing process\, materials are forced to flow out of the printing head to form a 3D structure on the printing stage. The properties and printability of these materials are important to the formation and maintenance of the architecture and structural integrity of the scaffolds. Among the various materials used to print tissue scaffolds\, sodium alginate (Alg) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCt) stand out due to their biocompatibility\, biodegradability\, and their ability to retain a large amount of water for mimicking the native extracellular matrix. This presentation will introduce background concepts important to tissue scaffolds like the integration of 3D printing with polymeric materials and tissue scaffolds design. The focus is on converting crops and agriculture residue/by-products to higher value products of industrial application. The focus of the presentation will be on providing high level introduction of work being undertaken in the University of Saskatchewan and discussing projects undertaken by us to add value to various agriculture residue. Specially\, the presentation will focus on the work of utilizing canola meal\, oat hulls and straw biomass for materials\, chemicals and food application. \nPresenter: Bishnu Acharya\, Ph.D.\, P. Eng. Dr. Acharya is an Associate Professor and Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Endowed Research Chair in Bioprocess Engineering at the College of Engineering in the University of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on the development of high value bioproducts from low-value biomass and agro processing waste. His research expertise lies in the area of bioprocessing and conversion\, particularly in the emerging area of conversion of biomass to bioproducts for chemical\, material\, and energy applications by adopting a circular bioeconomy approach. His awards include 2024 Mitacs Innovation Award – Outstanding Research Leadership\, USask – High Scholarly Impact Award (2024)\, UPEI Faculty Association – Scholarly Achievement Award (2019)\, and Graduate Faculty Appreciation Award (2018). Dr. Acharya’s research work has been published in 8 book chapters\, over 90 journal articles and several conferences and provided training to more than 70 HQP.
