SUMMARY:Speaking of Diversity in Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 12\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nEvent Format: Lecture \nLocation: Online \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Engineering Society \nEvent Summary: Historically\, engineering and control systems have had a rather homogeneous set of participation\, which is caused by a variety of factors ranging from bias to long held social norms and company and government policies which do not to support broader participation in the workforce. Additionally\, when achievements are experienced by more diverse members\, they are often overlooked or diminished which contribute to high dropout rates. By failing to improve inclusion\, the damages and lost opportunities lie not just with those who are not included\, but with the industry as a whole. A more diverse cast offers a wider array of experiences and knowledge known to lead to better solutions. To improve this\, broad changes are necessary from how we view and support less traditional candidates to how employers and governments support workers and families. \nHow to Register: Click here for more information and to register \nEvent Contact: Saskatoon Engineering Society – info@saskatoonengineers.com \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.

SUMMARY:Design and Development of Hybrid Renewable Microgrids - An APEGS Webinar - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 4\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format:  Live Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Live Webinar Series Presentation \nEvent Summary: Today\, due to environmental concerns about CO2 emissions in the power generation sector and increasing electricity demands\, renewable energy resources are becoming increasingly popular. The rate of renewable penetration in power systems is growing faster than it did two decades ago. Renewable energies can be utilized on a large scale\, such as at the utility level\, or on a smaller scale\, such as residential or commercial applications\, where they can operate in isolated mode. The utilization of renewable energy resources is often carried out through the concept of microgrids. A microgrid is a combination of two or more renewable energy resources that collaborate within a controllable architecture to provide reliable power to loads. Microgrids can either be connected to the utility power grid or operate independently in isolated mode. This presentation focuses on the design and development of hybrid renewable microgrids for remote communities in Northern Saskatchewan. It is based on a research project conducted at the University of Regina. The presentation covers the basics of designing a hybrid microgrid and introduces the use of Vortex turbines and Vanadium Flow Batteries as potential distributed units for power production applications in Saskatchewan. \nPresenter: Mehdi Hedayatpour\, Engineer-in-Training – Mehdi’s interest in engineering began in high school and continued on to Polytechnique and university where he earned an Associate degree and a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Mehdi then pursued a Master’s degree in electrical engineering\, specializing in power system control\, operation\, and renewable energies. After completing his military service and gaining some work experience\, Mehdi developed an interest in mechanical engineering. He earned a second Master’s degree in Industrial System Engineering\, during which he worked on two research projects: the design and development of a military hybrid electric tank\, and the design and development of hybrid renewable power plants for remote communities. Mehdi graduated from the University of Regina in February 2024. He currently works at SaskPower as an electrical engineer in the Hydro & Renewable department. \nWho Should Attend: Electrical engineers\, civil engineers\, mechanical engineers\, and utility company specialists. \nGeneral Information: There is no cost to attend\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:The Rainy River Tailings Management Area
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 14\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 – 1:00 PM CST \nEvent Format: In person presentation \nLocation: Saskatoon\, SK \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group \nEvent Summary: The Rainy River Tailings Management Area (TMA) in Northern Ontario is uniquely situated above highly plastic\, normally consolidated glacial clay soils of variable thickness. Since 2022\, SRK has assumed the Engineer of Record (EOR) role for the Rainy River TMA. This involves annual TMA dam raise design\, on-site support for construction quality control/assurance\, and dam performance monitoring during and post-construction. The TMA is of zoned material construction consisting of clay core dams with chimney and blanket filters and rockfill buttressing\, constructed upwards of ~30m in height. The clay foundation soils govern the design and construction of the dams. The design of the TMA requires large upstream and downstream rockfill buttressing combined with extensive monitoring to ensure continued performance is maintained. Instrumentation within the TMA foundation is extensive\, including piezometers\, slope inclinometers\, shape arrays\, settlement plates and magnetic extensometers to monitor the site. Both significant displacements (both lateral and vertical) and excess pore water pressures are observed throughout the year in response to additional loading. Monitoring of the instrumentation is a constant effort shared by the owner and EOR. The successful construction and operation of the site has benefited from continuous improvements to the monitoring and reporting system\, yearly field investigations\, interrogation of the most-probable and unfavourable conditions through numerical modelling\, and open communication between EOR and owner/site operations. \nCost: From $15 – $25 \nHow to Register: Click here for more information and to register \nEvent Contact: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group – www.saskatoongeotech.com \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS. \n

SUMMARY:Importance of Safety Critical Elements in Process Hazard Analysis – An APEGS Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 14\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format: Live Webinar \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Live Webinar Series Presentation \nEvent Summary: Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) play a pivotal role in safeguarding industrial operations\, particularly in high hazardous process industries such as oil and gas\, nuclear\, chemicals\, and petrochemicals. These elements encompass equipment\, systems\, and controls that are essential for preventing or mitigating major accidents hazards\, such as fires\, explosions\, and toxic releases. During Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)\, identifying and assessing SCEs ensures that potential risks are recognized and adequately managed by the team tasked with these responsibilities. By focusing on SCEs\, organizations can prioritize resources to maintain\, monitor\, and improve critical safety barriers\, thereby minimizing the likelihood of catastrophic failures. Identification and management of SCEs falls under many of the important elements in CSA767:2022 Process Safety Management. The integration of SCEs into PHA fosters a proactive approach to risk management\, enhancing the overall safety of operations and compliance with regulatory standards. Ultimately\, the recognition of SCEs underscores their vital role in preventing accidents and ensuring the protection of both personnel and the environment. \n Presenters: David Asekomhe\, Engineering Licensee\, is a safety enthusiast and agent of change with over 20 years of experience in the oil and gas\, petrochemical\, chemical\, and energy industries. His career began at ExxonMobil\, followed by senior roles in the UK. In 2013\, he moved to Canada\, advancing to VP at a process safety consulting company for over nine years. He has extensive experience in PSM and views it as a passion rather than just a job. Additionally\, he contributed to developing PSM frameworks for Qatar’s largest petrochemical company. \nJamie Merriam is a Process Safety and Safety Instrumented System trainer and a registered Professional Engineer with APEGA. With over 30 years of industry experience\, including 20 years dedicated to process safety issues\, Jamie currently consults on technical and training matters with David Asekomhe and Rskless Inc. Jamie began his career as an instrumentation technologist from SAIT\, working in construction and maintenance for about 10 years. In the early 90s\, Jamie moved to the USA and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee. After graduation\, he traveled to Newfoundland\, Canada\, and spent 10 years working in offshore construction and maintenance on the Terra Nova FPSO. Returning to Alberta\, he has since focused on Process Safety and Safety Instrumented Systems. Currently\, Jamie’s work involves a combination of training and Process Safety Management (PSM) support activities\, including facilitation\, auditing\, and development. \nWho Should Attend: Engineers and Technologists involved in the design\, operations and maintenance of process equipment. SUMMARY:Shifting Tracks: Permafrost Thaw along the Hudson Bay Railway
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 29\, 2024 \nTime: 12pm – 1pm \nEvent Format: Lunch Presentation \nLocation: South Dining Room\, Park Town Hotel\, 924 Spadina Crescent E\, Saskatoon\, SK\, S7K 3H5 \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group \nEvent Summary: Join the Saskatoon Geotechnical Group for the Cross Canada Lecture Tour\, presented by Jocelyn L.Hayley\, University of Calgary. Across the Canadian north\, access to stable linear infrastructure networks is critical for the well-being of Northern communities and the Canadian economy. The Hudson Bay Railway\, the first major transportation infrastructure built over permafrost in Canada\, is now facing significant climate-driven stability and drainage issues. The Hudson Bay Railway corridor extends across icy and frost-sensitive glacio-marine deposits through the sporadic\, discontinuous\, and continuous permafrost zones of Northern Manitoba. After touching on its rich history during construction and operation\, we introduce a\ntransdisciplinary multiyear project that aims to identify and characterize permafrost-related hazards along the railway corridor and investigate potential mitigation measures for improving rail stability and minimizing risk. Traveling along the Hudson Bay Railway\, we will look at site investigation methods\, explore ground temperatures and ice wedge formations\, drainage issues\, sinkhole formation and more – all with the goal to improve the resilience\, sustainability\, performance\, and safety of Canada’s permafrost railway. \nHow to Register: https://www.saskatoongeotech.com \nEvent Contact: saskatoongeotechnicalgroup@gmail.com \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.
