SUMMARY:How Sustainable is PV Solar Power? An Intro to Life Cycle Analysis and Planetary Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:If you search “solar photovoltaic sustainability” on the internet\, you will find a multitude of articles hailing the technology as green\, clean and ready to spearhead our world into a sustainable future. However\, you will also come across articles that are much more critical of the technology. This begs the question\, “How does one go about accessing the environmental impacts of a technology in a systematic\, objective way?” We answer this question using PV solar power as a case study. \nIn this course\, we study an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of solar photovoltaic power and learn of its impacts on human health\, freshwater\, climate change\, ecosystems and land use. We compare the environmental performance of solar PV to other renewable and non-renewable electricity generation technologies. Finally\, we take an in-depth look at a scientific article in which researchers show how countries can determine their optimal energy mix given their available resources and environmental objectives. \nTime: 4-hour self-paced course. Access this course online 24/7 for up to 2 years.\nLocation: Online – Register anytime and gain immediate access \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Engineers Canada - Reflecting Back and Looking Forward: Engineering Culture and the Future of the Profession
DESCRIPTION:The culture of engineering is a complex interplay among the people in engineering\, the institutions that train them\, and the societies they serve. The engineering profession plays a critical role in society; hundreds of thousands of engineers across the country create things that will forever change the way we interact with the world around us. But at the same time\, the engineering profession has long been\, and continues to be\, male-dominated and often faces accusations of elitism and callousness. Not everyone feels welcome in engineering. We need to shift the culture of the engineering profession. \nOn March 1 we kick off National Engineering Month 2023 with a panel discussion about the culture of engineering. The panellists will discuss the culture shift that is taking place within the profession\, from the calls for changes to the Iron Ring Ceremony\, efforts to diversify and attract more women to the profession\, to issues related to environmental justice and reconciliation. \nEngineers\, EITs\, engineering students\, engineering employers—don’t miss this important conversation about the future of your profession. \nModerator:\n• Adrian Harewood\, MA\, Former Award-Winning CBC TV Journalist & Radio host\, Associate Professor\, Journalism & Communications\, Carleton University \nPanellists:\n• John Gamble\, P.Eng.\, CEO and President\, Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada\n• Randy Herrmann\, FCAE\, FEC\, P.Eng.\, Director of the Engineering Access Program (ENGAP)\, University of Manitoba\n• Jeanette Southwood\, FCAE\, FEC\, LL.D. (honoris causa)\, P.Eng.\, Vice President\, Corporate Affairs and Strategic Partnerships\, Engineers Canada\n• Kari Zacharias\, PhD\, EIT\, Assistant Professor\, Centre for Engineering Professional Practice and Engineering Education\, University of Manitoba; Co-facilitator\, Retool the Ring \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:APEGS Spring PD Days - 21st Century Energy Transition - The Global Challenge of Our Time
DESCRIPTION:Affordable\, abundant and reliable energy is fundamental to human well-being and prosperity. For the past 200 years\, human lives have improved immensely as more and more people have gained access to energy\, primarily in the form of fossil fuels – coal\, petroleum and natural gas. As the energy transition continues into the 21st century\, many challenges are arising as we strive to achieve both energy security and to minimize associated environmental issues. \nThis presentation draws on the work of many energy professionals who contributed to creating a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “21st Century Energy Transition – How do We Make it Happen?” (available at https://www.coursera.org/learn/21st-century-energy-transition). \nWe derive energy today from a variety of sources\, from wood to nuclear fission. Each nation generates energy from the resources available to them\, which vary widely in price and availability across the globe. Changing our energy sources to meet particular objectives\, such as minimizing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining energy security\, presents massive implementation challenges. \nEffective actions to meet our energy goals require well-informed energy policy – meaning that both the public and policy-makers must learn a great deal more about energy – and about setting reasonable goals and priorities informed by scientific and engineering realities. A variety of polarized viewpoints makes the learning process very challenging and impedes our progress\, as demonstrated by a number of energy policy failures affecting billions of people today. \nMaking the 21st Century Energy Transition work well for humanity is the global challenge of our time. \nThis course will be hosted on the Microsoft Teams Platform.  Meeting links will be sent on March 14\, 2023. \nCertificates of Attendance will be issued to full attendance participants.  This course is eligible for Formal Activity CPD credit and is subject to the APEGS PD Days Pricing Policy. \nPresented by: Brad Hayes\, Ph.D.\, P.Geol.\, FGC – University of Alberta \nBrad Hayes is President of Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd.\, a geoscience and engineering consulting firm providing professional advice to clients working in oil and gas\, helium and lithium exploration\, water resource management\, and geothermal energy. \nBrad holds a PhD in geology from the University of Alberta\, and has 40 years of diverse experience applying subsurface geoscience in resource industries. He is Outreach Director for the Canadian Society for Evolving Energy\, and a Past-President of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists.  He is a member of the Energy Resources Technical Advisory Committee for Geoscience BC and a Fellow of the Balsillie School for International Affairs. \nBrad is an Adjunct Professor in the University of Alberta Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\, and a sessional lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Mount Royal University. Leading a team with U of A\, he has developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “21st Century Energy Transition – How do We Make it Happen?” as a product of extensive research and consultation on modern energy issues. \nBrad is a prolific media commentator\, writing for a variety of technical and business publications as well as engaging actively on social media talking about energy. \nEarly bird price: $25 (taxes included)\nRegular price: $45 (taxes included) \nRegister here! \nEarly bird registration deadline: March 2\, 2023\nRegistration deadline: March 9\, 2023 \nCancellations are handled as follows: \n\nCancellations received within 24 hours of registration will be given a full refund with no cancellation fee.\nCancellations received greater than 5 business days before the event will result in a refund\, less an administration fee being the lesser of $50 or the registration fee plus tax.\nSpecial circumstances for cancellations that fall within the 5 business days of the event will be considered at the Registrar’s discretion.\nGranted refunds will be issued by cheque by APEGS.  No refunds will be issued through the Eventbrite system.
