SUMMARY:The Future of Registration and Regulation of Firms by APEGS
DESCRIPTION:One of the recommendations resulting from the governance review that APEGS undertook in 2019 was for APEGS to consider changes to the requirements for corporate entity registration in Saskatchewan\, commonly referred to as the Certificate of Authorization (CofA). \nIn the fall of 2021\, council established the Corporate Registrant Task Group to undertake this work\, including the review of the ongoing need for\, or appropriateness of\, Permission to Consult (PtoC). Council appointed Bert Munro\, P.Eng.\, a past president and semi-retired consultant\, as the task group chair with volunteer representation from a cross section of our membership employed by corporate stakeholders from industry and consulting firms across Canada\, as well as Saskatchewan crown corporations. \nThe specific purpose of the task group includes examining the regulation of corporate entities that engage in the practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience\, including sole proprietors\, and to provide recommendations on future requirements for CofA holders and PtoC and on any required bylaw revisions. \nThis session will provide an overview of the work of the task group to date and an opportunity for members to make suggestions on the regulation of corporate entities as stakeholders in this process. Suggestions will be considered as the task group prepares their recommendations to Council. \nSpeaker \nBert Munro\, P.Eng.\, FCSCE\, FCSSE\, FEC\, FGC (Hon) \nChair\, APEGS Corporate Registrant Task Group \n  \nRegistration is open until June 3\, 2022 at 5 PM. \nAll those who register will receive an invitation from communications1@apegs.ca during the week of June 6th to join the session in Microsoft Teams.

SUMMARY:SES Lecture - IT & Security Challenges at CERN
DESCRIPTION:Today\, our biological lives are deeply entangled and joint in symbiosis with the digital functioning of computer systems. Telephony. Media. Money. Without digital IT\, our comfortable life would grind to a halt. Hence\, the computer security of such systems is essential to protect our way of living. \nIf you consider security is difficult\, try doing so for a large research institution with both staff\, visitors\, and equipment from around the world. Dr Lüders will focus on the struggles to deploy adequate security measures while maintaining a suitable balance with the academic nature of the organisation. \nStefan Lüders\, PhD\, graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and joined the European Organization for Particle Physics (CERN) in 2002. SUMMARY:SES Lecture - Why Control System Cyber-Security Sucks
DESCRIPTION:The control systems at CERN (the European Organization for Particle Physics) is one of the most complex in the world. This\, coupled with the institution’s high profile makes securing these systems a unique challenge. \nDr Lüders will discuss the general principles of control systems used for running the experiments and accelerators of the Large Hadron Collider complex at the European Organization for Particle Physics (CERN). In particular\, it will focus on the struggles to deploy adequate security measures while maintaining a suitable balance with the academic nature of the Organization. Or\, bluntly: Why control system cyber-security just plainly sucks. \nStefan Lüders\, PhD\, graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and joined the European Organization for Particle Physics (CERN) in 2002. Since 2009\, he is heading the CERN Computer Security Incident Response Team as CERN’s Computer Security Officer with the mandate to coordinate all aspects of CERN’s computer security – office computing security\, computer centre security\, GRID computing security and control system security – whilst taking into account CERN’s operational needs. \nDr Lüders has presented on computer security and control system cyber-security topics at many different occasions to international bodies\, governments\, and companies\, and published several articles. \nClick here for more information and registration.
