SUMMARY:Understanding and Controlling Corrosion - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Event Format: Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Webinar Series Presentation \nEvent Summary: Rust sometimes seems unstoppable. Transmission towers\, bridges\, pipelines\, tanks\, water lines\, sewer lines: they all corrode. A clear understanding of the corrosion mechanisms and the appropriate use of corrosion mitigation tools and techniques can reduce the risk to people\, the environment\, and the cost of corrosion – estimated at 3% of annual GDP in Canada. \nThis presentation will discuss the importance of corrosion control and introduce the basics of corrosion reactions. The role of coatings will be discussed\, as well as electrochemical corrosion control techniques: cathodic protection and anodic protection. Examples of corrosion challenges and solutions will be drawn from and applied to various industries including transportation (bridges\, parking garages)\, mining (wells\, tanks\, infrastructure)\, communication (cell towers\, grounding)\, municipal (water\, wastewater) and energy (transmission towers\, pipelines). \nPresenters: \nDaniel Fingas\, P.Eng. is the Technical Engineering Manager at Corrosion Service Company Limited. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor’s in Engineering Science and master’s in Electrical Engineering. Daniel entered the corrosion industry in 2010 and has broad exposure to the onshore cathodic protection industry including for pipelines\, storage tanks\, well casings\, and parking garages. He also has extensive experience with data interpretation for over-the-line surveys\, coupons and pipeline integrity assessment. He is a NACE certified Cathodic Protection Specialist and a Professional Engineer. \nJohn Kennedy is the Regional Saskatchewan Operations Manager at Corrosion Service Company Limited. He graduated from Thompson Rivers University with a bachelor’s in Physics in 2011 and has been working in the cathodic protection industry since 2008. He is a NACE certified Cathodic Protection Specialist. \nThere is no cost to attend. \nThis event will be held on the Microsoft Teams platform. The meeting link will be sent via email on January 8\, 2024. \nHow to Register: THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. If you need to cancel your registration to this event\, please email cpd@apegs.ca. \nEvent Contact: APEGS Professional Standards Department | Angela Foster or Jolene Arthur | cpd@apegs.ca \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the presenters and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.

SUMMARY:Mitigating Landslide on Hwy 40 (A Toolbox of Solutions)
DESCRIPTION:Event Format: In-person Presentation \nLocation: The Park Town Hotel\, Saskatoon\, SK \nHosting Organization: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group \nEvent Summary: Thurber has been participating in Alberta Transportation’s Geohazard Risk Management Program for many years. This presentation describes three sites along Highway 40\, located north of Grande Cache\, Alberta\, where remedial measures were carried out to stabilize sections of the highway that were being affected by landslide movements. The three sites were chosen to demonstrate a variety of techniques that were implemented ranging from slope flattening/offloading\, to dewatering\, excavation and replacement with stronger backfill\, shear keys\, toe berms and pile walls. The site conditions\, constraints\, investigation\, design\, and construction are touched on for each site. The goal of the presentation is to provide a tool kit of techniques for various remedial projects. \nAbout the Presenter:  Don Proudfoot is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Partner of Thurber Engineering Ltd. He completed his civil technologist diploma at NAIT and then joined Thurber in 1980\, taking breaks to complete a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering at Lakehead University and then an M.Eng. degree in geotechnical engineering at the University of Alberta. He spent a four-year stint helping open Thurber’s office in Toronto but has otherwise worked out of the Edmonton office. Don is married with three children and loves anything to do with the outdoors. Don spends a lot of time assessing\, investigating\, and remediating landslides that are affecting Alberta’s highways\, which is what this presentation will be focused on. \nHow to Register: Click here for more information and to register. \nEvent Contact: Saskatoon Geotechnical Group \nDisclaimer: The views expressed during this event are those of the hosting organization and do not necessarily represent the views of APEGS.
