SUMMARY:University of Regina's Microgrid: Opportunities\, Challenges\, and Future Applications – An APEGS Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2025 \nTime: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CST (Saskatchewan Time) \nEvent Format: Live Webinar – Microsoft Teams \nHosting Organization: APEGS – A Member-Led Webinar Series Presentation \nRegistration is now closed.  \n______________________________________________________________________________ \nEvent Summary: A microgrid is a small-scale energy system that generates\, stores\, and distributes electricity using renewable sources such as solar\, wind\, and hydro power. It operates as a self-sufficient power system that can connect to the main grid when necessary. The University of Regina’s Microgrid Living Lab\, the first of its kind in Saskatchewan\, serves as both a research and teaching facility as well as a testing ground. Funded by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan)\, the lab features real energy infrastructure and resources\, including loads\, an advanced digital control centre\, a battery storage system\, and renewable energy sources. These tools enable researchers\, students\, and companies to simulate and test microgrid operations in real-world conditions. This presentation will briefly introduce the concept of microgrids\, describe the University of Regina’s microgrid and its use cases\, and highlight the benefits and future prospects. It will also discuss the challenges involved in developing such systems. Finally\, a live demonstration of the microgrid control system will be provided. \nPresenter: Dr. Irfan Al-Anbagi\, P.Eng. is a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science\, University of Regina\, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Saskatchewan. He also directs the University of Regina’s Internet of Things (IoT) and Microgrid research laboratories. Dr. Al-Anbagi earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 2013. From 2013 to 2015\, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Product Development Manager for the “SecCharge” Project at the University of Ottawa. His research centers on IoT systems\, smart grid communication\, and information systems\, including big data analysis\, system reliability\, optimization\, and cybersecurity. He is a registered professional engineer with APEGS and PEO. \n______________________________________________________________________________ \nGeneral Information: There is no cost to attend\, but registration is required.
