SGS – Sedimentological Heterogeneities of the Montney Formation: Case Study along the Pouce Coupe-Groundbirch Trend

April 13, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Lower Triassic Montney Formation is often referred to as the “Monotoney” with its thickness of up to 300 m of seemingly monotonous appearance of mainly planar laminated grey siltstone. However, sedimentological heterogeneities are prevalent throughout the formation as facies variability and depositional processes subtly change both spatially and temporally. Since the formation is predominately composed of silt sized grains, innovative techniques and the integration of datasets are needed to assess and quantify subtle heterogeneities within the interval. To investigate such variability, a detailed facies analysis was conducted on core within the greater Pouce Coupe field in Alberta to identify lithological characteristics and sedimentological fabrics. Trends observed in Pouce Coupe were extrapolated westward into British Columbia using core and well log data. Understanding sedimentological heterogeneities can inherently be linked to geomechanical and reservoir properties, and likely play an important role in understanding the behavior of hydraulic fracturing within this unconventional reservoir.

Dr. Carolyn Furlong
Postdoctoral Associate
University of Calgary

Dr. Carolyn Furlong is currently a Post Doctoral Associate at the University of Calgary. She has worked on a variety of projects integrating the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Lower Triassic Montney Formation with other geological, geophysical, and engineering datasets. Some projects include regional subsurface mapping and facies distribution, investigating the relationship between rock properties and natural fractures with induced seismicity, and understanding the sedimentologic and stratigraphic controls on the distribution of toxic, sour gas (hydrogen sulphide, H2S) in Triassic rocks in Western Canada. She holds a PhD and MSc in geology from the University of Alberta and a BSc in Earth Science Education from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland and will be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor at the Grant MacEwan University in the fall.
