Event Summary
The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) created the Resilient Homes Task Force (RHTF) to increase capacity of the insurance and builder industries to implement resilience practices in new homes and renovations. As climate disruptions increase, resources and approaches developed through the collaboration are meant to expedite application of resilience practices.
Leveraging a tiered framework, the initiative prioritizes scalable, constructible, and cost-effective resilience options for low-rise residential construction. Field trials with builders in multiple Canadian regions are being implemented to evaluate practicality, availability, and cost for resilience measures for basement/urban flooding, wildfire, hail, and high wind. Market research surveys conducted by RHTF indicate public appetite to invest in hazard-specific improvements for new and existing homes. Insurance “incentives” are also increasingly available to motivate resilience.
While industry willingness for resilience is growing, practical implementation barriers must be addressed. ICLR and CHBA will continue to work to simplify and streamline resilience measures until they fit into construction workflows.
Presenter
Dan Sandink is Director of Research at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction. He has authored or co-authored over 60 technical reports and peer-reviewed articles on extreme weather and disaster resilience. Dan manages ICLR’s PIEVC Program and co-chairs Canada’s National Infrastructure and Buildings Working Group. He also contributes to numerous national, provincial, local, and industry initiatives focused on improving climate resilience for Canadian homes. Dan studied geography and land use planning at the University of Guelph, Western University, and the University of Toronto.
